Even as the Maldives heat up, experiencing a wave of new development, there’s one resort that’s been there all along — well, ten years, at least, which these days amounts to about half an eternity in the hotel world.
Most of the thousand-plus islands of the Maldives seem custom-made for an idyllic desert-island escape, and this one is no different. The Banyan Tree’s 48 villas are clustered on a densely forested island that’s just large enough to contain them all while still feeling cozy — at your back, a dense knot of palms, and in front, a sparkling white baby-powder beach and the eerily clear blue sea.
Villas are outfitted in a classic five-star style, with all the modern conveniences (minus, notably, television) beneath traditional thatched roofs. Each one has its own private outdoor jet pool, and variable views of the sea, some a bit closer than others.
The diving all over the Maldives is phenomenal, and this particular island takes special care of its reef, with a dedicated staff of marine biologists employed in conserving the local sea life and leading guests on dives and eco-safaris. And though the price tag may induce some buyer’s remorse, there’s no sense of environmental guilt — the Banyan Tree’s environmental credentials are impeccable.
