On the east side of New Zealand's North Island is Hawkes Bay, the center of New Zealand's wine industry and home to, among other labels, the Black Barn vineyards. The Black Barn itself is, from the outside, exactly what the name suggests — a rustic barn-styled cottage amidst vineyards, olive trees and citrus groves. Inside, though, is a bit of a surprise: a tiny (two bedrooms) designer-chic hotel, where crisp contemporary design meets the slow-paced country life.

In fact, to call it a hotel at all is a bit of an overstatement; though traditional services and catering are available, the Black Barn can only be rented in its entirety. The feeling is much more that of a guest house — in this case, patrons are guests of the Black Barn winery, just five minutes' walk away, and are welcome to pick artichokes, almonds, figs and oranges from the property's groves.

The Barn has its own full kitchen, for guests' use, including an outdoor gas barbecue, and comes stocked with provisions — though catered meals can also be arranged. And what services and amenities the Barn lacks are available in the surrounding area, and the winery's staff is on hand to make dining recommendations and to organize sightseeing tours, fishing trips, and anything else imaginable.
