Once simply a magnet for student backpackers, the tropical Eden of Costa Rica has lately begun to attract a slightly more upmarket crowd. Adding to the number of budget lodges and surfers’ haunts, a new wave of luxury hotels is opening, as are some more intimate hotels — places like the Florblanca Resort.
Florblanca lies along the beach just north of Santa Teresa, on the remote Nicoya Peninsula, one of Costa Rica’s most desirable destinations, if perhaps not entirely convenient to reach — airport transfers via chartered Bentleys are still years away.
This isn’t that kind of place anyway. These ten villas are expansive, comfortable, handsomely decorated, but stop well short of any sort of ostentatiousness — king beds are the only real indulgence, surrounded by simple wooden furniture atop terra cotta floors. All feature outdoor bathrooms, in a sort of garden courtyard, with deep soaking tubs, biodegradable bath products and reminders to use the luxury of running water sparingly.
There are no televisions in the villas, though hopeless cases can find one in the lounge — most guests, though, will prefer a soak in the pool or a walk down to the beach. A teak-floored dojo pavilion offers yoga and pilates sessions, and in-suite massages are available, while those of an active bent can arrange for surfing, biking or fishing expeditions.
How to get there:
The drive from San Jose to Florblanca Resort is a difficult 5 hour trip that includes a ferry crossing on the Gulf of Nicoya.
