As one of Switzerland’s biggest resorts, Verbier is home to all kinds of hotels. But at the highest of the high end there’s just one: the Chalet d’Adrien. At the edge of Verbier village, the Chalet stands a hundred feet from the bottom of the Savoleyres lift, a classic Alpine lodge housing two fine restaurants and just twenty-nine rooms and suites.
Edgy it certainly isn’t. Not only is the Chalet d’Adrien a charmingly conventional Swiss ski lodge, but it’s decked out in a teddy-bear theme. You can infer from this fact that it’s more about family fun or old-fashioned romance than twenty-something après-ski debauchery, and you’d be absolutely correct. There’s more to life than nightlife, after all — for a start, there’s the daytime to consider.
It starts on waking in one of the Chalet’s enormously comfortable bedrooms, and continues with a hearty breakfast downstairs. The lift is a hundred feet from your door, and should you elect to take the day off from skiing, there’s a full-service spa and a heated pool at your disposal. Post-ski snacks lead to dinner at La Table d’Adrien, one of very few Italian restaurants in Verbier, and the terrace offers unparalleled views of the surrounding massifs. That’s all there is to it, and it’s hard to see the need for more — there’s no sense in re-inventing the wheel when the old one spins so exquisitely.
