Le Toiny is the sort of place where budget is no consideration. Not because it’s so affordable—quite the contrary, in fact. If you’re in the market for a stay at Le Toiny, you probably make your travel plans based on factors other than price.

That said, we’d recommend this particular extravagance to anyone. The French West Indies, and St. Barthelemy in particular, have a reputation for exclusivity, for unimpeachable cool, and, rare in the Caribbean, for excellent cuisine. And Le Toiny is quite possibly at the apex in all of these categories. The guests the next villa over are as likely to be Hollywood royalty as anything else, and more to the point, the one thing they certainly won’t be is package tourists in black socks.

A handful of cottages dot the hillside above Anse de Toiny, divided into fifteen suites overlooking the lagoon and the sea beyond. And though the style is colonial, the amenities are modern; expect DVD players, satellite television and Bang & Olufsen telephones. Space is at no shortage, either in the bedrooms or the white marble bathrooms, and private terraces and pools await outside.

If there’s anything at all off about Le Toiny, it’s the beach, which is a bit wild compared to the soft sands you may be expecting. It hardly matters, when you’ve got your own private pool terrace, and it’s more than compensated for by the cuisine. Le Gaïac is blessed with a splendid view, but more importantly, it serves a splendid cuisine, a rarity in this part of the world, where local resources are scarce and local traditions coarse. The whole thing adds up to a taste of old-world French elegance along with a location that must be seen to be believed, and it’s a place worth begging, borrowing or stealing to experience.
