Mazatlán may be known for its tourist industry, and for its seasonal influx of drunk and belligerent American college students. And it's true that parts of the city, especially the Zona Dorada (the Golden Zone) are overbuilt, noisy, and lacking in character.

The same cannot be said for New Mazatlán, the northern end of the city, the district Pueblo Bonito Emerald Bay calls home. Here it's possible to imagine what the Hollywood stars saw in this place, back in the 1940s — sure, New Mazatlán lacks the history, the colonial flourishes and the cultural icons of the old town; but so too does it lack the congestion, the tackiness, the chaos that threaten to overtake the southern part of town.

Pueblo Bonito Emerald Bay may lack in authentic colonial charms—the mangrove trees dotting the property are older than any of the buildings here—but there is no shortage of peace and quiet. The emphasis is a bit more on escape and privacy — come here with, rather than in search of, that special someone.

There is plenty to do, from the typical seaside resort offerings (water sports, deep-sea fishing, golf) to the more idiosyncratic — ATV rentals and eco-tours. Of course the rollicking Mazatlán nightlife is easily accessible; but when the night is over, you can leave the party behind and tuck in to this exceedingly quiet and private resort.
