To stay in one of Beijing’s big business hotels, you’d almost think capitalism had been invented here — they’re as modern, as opulent and as technologically advanced as those elsewhere in Asia or anywhere else, and are in their own way hugely impressive, if that’s the sort of thing you’re after.

The Red Capital Club, however, is something completely different: not only is it tiny, a mere five rooms, and rather romantically well-hidden, tucked away in an unassuming residential neighborhood, but it’s something of a Revolutionary fantasy, a kitsch tribute to the iconography of Maoist China. Little Red Books are everywhere, and the hotel’s collection of propaganda posters and Red Guard figurines is not to be trifled with.

Guest rooms face a central courtyard and are well-appointed, anything but minimal, some furnished with silk-draped opium beds, others packed with volumes of Marx and Chinese political history. Furnishings are decadent, the sort of thing that would have been reserved for upper-echelon Party members only, and the public spaces seem tailor-made for back-room dealing, from the leather-upholstered cigar lounge to the Bomb Shelter bar, which is quite literally exactly as it sounds.

Dining comes courtesy of the nearby Red Capital Club restaurant, serving upscale fare including some of Mao and Deng’s favorite dishes accompanied by the house Red Capital Bordeaux. Cap it off with a ride in Madame Mao’s limousine, for an experience fit for a Party leader.
