The St. Regis Hotel is occupies the former grounds of the Beijing International Club, in the center of the diplomatic district, and near the Jian Guo Men Wai business district, which, we wager, will be the ultimate destination of most visiting foreigners.

In case you have been in a sensory deprivation tank for the last fifteen years, the atmosphere in today's Beijing is a far cry from its Cold War image as a non-stop uniformed Maoist rally. Though still nominally Communist, China's is far and away the fastest growing economy in the world, and though Shanghai is known as the trader's Mecca, Beijing is also all about business.

The St. Regis Hotel, owned by the Starwood group, caters to the international business traveler - this is no W Beijing. The word "lavish" falls short of describing the sheer material luxury of the 273 rooms and suites - in fact there are as many suites here as there are traditional rooms. All feature large-screen televisions, for example, though we will spare you the comprehensive list of amenities, as it is long enough that it would likely crash your browser.

The same would be true of a complete list of the hotel's facilities; you will have to take us at our word when we say that this hotel has every service and amenity found in any big business hotel, anywhere, ever - not just indoor tennis, but badminton as well, just to take one example. And here, nearly everything is available 24 hours a day, including room service, the concierge, and even the fitness center.

Like any self-respecting international business hotel, the St. Regis has several restaurants, one in the local style (Celestial Court, serving Cantonese and other traditionally Chinese fare) and one in a distant but surprisingly well-executed foreign style (the casual-chic Danieli's is Italian). There are a number of other bars, lounges, and restaurants, one Japanese, one international, and the Garden Court offers a superb all-day buffet.

Why the St. Regis, then? If you haven't already gathered, the theme here is overkill, the utmost in luxury, convenience, and service. If you have never been to an East Asian luxury hotel, you are in for an experience you will not soon forget - and you may return home wondering if there's a chapter on hotels in that little red book.
